Hi Allison,

I think he is just being like most other dogs that bark when the door bell goes etc, in terms of his space which is the kitchen/diner, we are definitely in control and Alfie is at the bottom of the pack.....! he said...on the whole he is a very good natured and calm dog!

Hi Kevin- I think this territorial business is more prevalent in dogs rather than bitches, we had a dog from a puppy and he was about 12- 18 months old, he become very jealous, guarding the telephone, front door and eventually wouldn't let me open the kitchen cupboards. I was quite inexperienced with the breed at the time and also pregnant so we gave him to a breeder, then found out later that 3 of his litter mates were put down because they turned very nasty. We blamed ourselves at the time and probably should have taken him to training classes. We were worried about taking on a rescue bitch because of our first experience, but we have had no problems. It does become difficult to sort out their behaviours, because as I've said they are stubborn and do get fixed ideas especially if they are inadvertently rewarded for what they are doing. If I had my time again with my puppy, I would have taken some advice from a canine behaviouralist. Hope this helps (even though its a bit long winded)!

Hi Allison,
Thanks for your comments!English Bull Terriers are definitely not like other dogs! When we first had Alfie he was very quiet, but at the moment is becoming very territorial around the home. He goes mad at the postman, and anyone walking past the house. We have tried to socialize him from day one and gets on well with all dogs, but if he is playing with a stick or a ball becomes VERY focused, almost obsessed with his toy. He had been living with two cats, and doesn't chase them as much now as he did when he first arrived, hopefully that will get better with time.
Its a long battle to train him, we are still training him but making progress.....I'll post some more pictures of him on Par beach soon!

Love your photos of Alfie- you can see how he's gone from a gorgeous puppy to a beautiful dog. At first you think they will never grow into their feet, and their ears will never be straight, and then one day it just happens. My Mia is a brown and white 7 or 8 year old rescue, I've had her about 2 years now and she is so well behaved- they are really big soppy things but are aware of there power if they need it. Saying that she just laid down a few months ago when a mastiff jumped on top of her, it was my whippet that did the fighting. They dont bark much, and have a tendency to be stubborn and lazy. Mia suffers with allergies mostly on her paws so is not always up for walking, and I think she plays on this a bit. They have some nasty habits too, like eating anything in the garden including their own poo! My last rescue Sally lived until she was 15 and was just a joy to own- but they are a specialist breed and not suitable for everyone. I've had no problem with my Bull Terriers and my children especially when they were babies, but I would never leave them alone with any dog. Definitely my favourite breed.
